Leona B. Baack, age 96 of Marengo, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 31, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Pastor Andrew Gray officiating. Inurnment will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, May 30, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Leona is survived by a nephew Dennis Baack of Marion, and three nieces, Donna Krebs (David) of Webster, Darla Baack (James Hilton) of Jacksonville, OR, RoxAnn Hiam (Robert) of Castle Rock, CO, and great-nieces and nephews, Don Sawin, Jenny Hahn (Dean), Eric Krebs, Paul Hiam, and Carissa Hiam; and great-great nieces and nephews, Zane, Zoe, Cera and Eden Hahn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gesine Brockshus Baack, and two brothers and their wives, Walter and Margaret Baack, and Marvin and Shirley Baack.
Leona Bertha Anna Baack was born December 28, 1917 in Oxford, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Gesine Brockshus Baack. She attended the York Township #1 School and Immanuel Lutheran School, rural Williamsburg. She also took correspondence classes in Textiles and Accounting. Leona was employed for many years with the Heyman Company, selling fabrics and notions to local fabric stores. She received salesman of the year several times. She also worked for Schantz Furniture in Amana for several years.
Leona enjoyed crafts and gardening and was known for her baking and canning abilities. She enjoyed spending time with her family and cared for her parents whenever they were in need. While she never had children of her own, she especially cherished her nieces and nephews, and her extended family.
Leona was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, and the Ladies Aid.
