Charlie Joseph Boerjan, age 82, of Marengo, died Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Marengo Memorial Hospital. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2016, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa, with Fr. David Wilkening officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Charlie Boerjan was born June 8, 1934, in Osage, the son of Frank and Suzanna Arickx Boerjan. He graduated from Osage High School, where he was a state champion wrestler in 1950 at 105 lbs. and runner up in 1951. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy, where he wrestled for two years before boarding the USS Whitehurst as a radioman. Charlie was stationed in Japan, Guam and Hawaii. Returning from the Navy, he attended the University of Iowa. In 1962 he started working for the Iowa City, U.S. Postal Service as a carrier, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion. Charlie was co-founder and a past president of the Iowa Hawkeye Area Wrestling Club, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, and a hobby farmer, raising horses, cattle and sheep. He especially loved his time spent with family and get togethers.
Charlie is survived by his wife Connie of 23 years, six children, Mike Boerjan, of North Liberty, Mark Boerjan (Cheryl Fischer), of West Branch, Kim Loffer, of Marengo, Suzette Ehrle, of Cedar Rapids, Darren (Michelle Hallerud) Slaymaker, of Urbana, and Jon Smith of Ankeny; eight grandchildren Melissa (Pat) Ingle, Matthew (Lindsey) Boerjan, Micah Boerjan, David and Sarah Fischer, Bryce Loffer, Ella and Hayden Ehrle; three great grandchildren Addison and Tanner Boerjan, and Lana Ingle; a sister Patricia Schlindwein of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Mary Beth and two brothers August and James.
