John Herman Danker, age 83, of Marengo, died Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 10, 2016, St. John Lutheran Church, Marengo, with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial with military honors: Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, October 9, 2016, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
John is survived by his wife Leona; two sons Steven (Julie) Danker of Waterloo and Mark (Sarri) Danker of Fayette; five grandchildren, Whitney, Joshua and Jonathan Danker of Waterloo, and Samuel and Levi Danker of Fayette; and a sister Dorothy Wandling of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Alfred, and a sister Frances.
John Herman Danker was born March 20, 1933, in rural Keystone, the son of Bernard and Helene Heitmann Danker. He graduated from the Keystone High School in 1951. John served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, and spent one year in Korea. He married Leona Petersen on November 27, 1955, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Newhall. John was employed with Thermogas Company for 36 years, in sales and service, and delivering propane. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Wandling-Wendel Post 76. He was a past Jaycees charter member and president. John served on the Marengo Memorial Hospital Board for 14 years. He directed and coached summer baseball teams, Peewee, Little League, and Pony League, for many years. He loved gardening, playing bridge and following baseball.
