William L. Garringer, age 76 of Williamsburg, died Monday, December 15, 2014, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. Private family services will be held at Yankee Point Cemetery, Parnell, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be contributed to Mercy Hospital Hospice Program, Iowa City. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Darlyn of Williamsburg; three sons, Keith (Patty) of Williamsburg, Karey (Judy) of Iowa City; and Kevin (Kay) of Williamsburg; a daughter, Karmen (Kollin) Munson of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren; a brother, James (Jeanne) of Williamsburg; a sister Betty Van Dee of Vining; a brother-in-law, Ramon Newkirk (Mary) of Riverside and a sister-in-law, Claudia Doehrmann (Lloyd) of Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Esta Brown Garringer, and five brothers, Howard Brown, and Keith, Orville, Ralph, and Vernon Garringer.
William Layton Garringer was born May 16, 1938 in Parnell, Iowa, the son of Carl L. and Esta Brown Garringer. He attended the Williamsburg schools and later received his GED. William married Darlyn Newkirk on October 21, 1956 in Williamsburg. He was employed as a lineman and supervisor with GTE General Telephone for 32 years, retiring from there.
