Alice Lee Tucker Hayes, age 95 of Marengo, died Wednesday morning, June 25, 2014 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 28, 2014, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Matt German officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 5-7 P.M. Friday, June 27, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Alice is survived by a daughter, Elaine Cooney and husband Gary of Hudson; five grandchildren, Vance Schumacher (Adrienne) of Cedar Rapids, Serena Brueggemeyer (Erik) of Cedar Rapids, Alisa Cooney of Waterloo, Alison Foughty (Scott) of Polk City, and Johnette Stephenson (Jeff) of Belle Plaine; and nine great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Larry Schumacher of Marengo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard Hayes in 2005, a daughter Gloria Schumacher in 2012, a son John Hayes in 2010 and his wife Florence in 2013, and four brothers, and five sisters, Deana Hancock, May Harshman, Virginia Hoos, Beth Caughlan, Charles David Tucker, Jr, Gertrude Waag, Don Tucker, Mack Tucker, and Joe Tucker.
Alice Lee Tucker was born October 15, 1918 in Pittsfield, Illinois, the daughter of Charles David Tucker and Elizabeth Ryan Tucker. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1937 and attended college in Quincy, Illinois. Alice married Howard S. Hayes on March 9, 1940 in Hannibal, MO. Alice worked for Cryovac on the assembly line, Colonial Manor in Amana as a CNA and a CMA, and the Iowa Valley Elementary School as a teacher’s aid with the special education classes. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She also liked to garden and work in her flower beds.
Alice was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo for over 52 years, where she was former secretary/ treasurer of the United Methodist Women.
