Bonnie J. Hertel, age 70 of Middle Amana, died Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.  Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 28, 2015, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Tony Berger officiating.  Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery.  Visitation: 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the church.  Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Heritage Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.

She is survived by her husband Stan; a brother Larry (Wilma) Rettig of South Amana; and a sister Rosemary (David) Houser of Moatsville, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Bonnie Jean Rettig was born June 1, 1945 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Lina Leonhardt Rettig. She received her education in the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School. Bonnie and Stan Hertel were married June 18, 1966 at the Amana Church. Bonnie continued her education at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and then went on to the University of Minnesota, receiving her bachelor degree in home economics. She worked for the Department of Human Services in Louisville and Frankfort, KY. The couple returned to Amana fifteen years ago, following their retirements. Bonnie was an outstanding seamstress and a wonderful cook.  She especially loved to shop. She was fond of animals, especially cats.
