Helen Berger Hertel, age 96 of Amana, died Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 8, 2013, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Mike Shoup officiating. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Helen is survived by her son, Larry of South Amana; a daughter Lynda H. Flaherty (Brian) of South Lake, TX; two grandchildren, Kellie and B. Kyle Flaherty; and a sister Emma Johnson of Norwalk, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry on June 3, 2011, three brothers, Fred, Adolph T. “A.T.” and Dan Berger, and three sisters, Christine Engelhaupt, Dorothy Marz and Emily in infancy.
Helen Berger was born October 14, 1916 in South Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Herman Berger and Mary Setzer Berger. She attended the South Amana schools and later attended the Cedar Rapids Business College. Helen married Henry Emil Hertel on November 10, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Besides a wife, mother, and homemaker, she worked in the communal kitchen, the shoe store, and later worked as an accountant in the Amana Refrigeration office.
