Irene Hicks, age 94, of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Funeral Service: 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa, with Rev. Brent DeSilva officiating. Burial: Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M., Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Irene is survived by 5 daughters; Darlene (Duane) Steele of Joplin, MO., Doris (Charles) Woodrum of Montezuma, Donna Gregson of Des Moines, Vicky (Jim) Zigler of Brooklyn, Diana (Kevin) Search of Galt, MO; one sister Merna Phelps of Montana; several grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, son Gary, and 2 grandsons, Gary Hicks Jr. and Timothy Bru; 3 brothers Bill, Lyle and Fred Martin; a sister Louise Post.
Irene Martin was born June 18, 1921, in rural Deep River, the daughter of William and Verna Neal Martin. She received her education in the country school by Deep River. She married Harold Hicks on November 1, 1939 in Missouri. Irene worked at Montezuma Manufacturing for 10 years and was also a homemaker. She enjoyed making blankets, sewing, quilting, all types of needlework and gardening. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
