Ralph Lewis Kahler, age 77 of Alamo, TX, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, August 18, 2013 at his home in Middle Amana, Iowa. Memorial Services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 22, 2013, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Luzerne, Iowa, with Rev. Michael Musick officiating. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens, Iowa City, at a later date. The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to the service on Thursday, August 22. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Ralph is survived by his wife Yvonne; two children, Randy Kahler and wife Julie of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Laurie Dvorak and husband Craig of Belvidere, Illinois; four grandchildren, Trevor Kahler (Carlie) of Liberty, MO, Ashley Dvorak of Belvidere, Trenton Kahler (Nikki) of Bellevue, NE, and Brock Dvorak of Belvidere; and a great-grandchild, Jude Kahler. Also surviving are his siblings, Alice Von Ahsen (Ivan) of Shellsburg, Kay Comried (Ray) of Marion, Jean Gallagher (Pat) of Cedar Rapids Ronnie Kahler (Linda) of Monticello; and Gerry Kahler Herr (Lee) of Amana, who he loved like a sister. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Russell, and a sister Eleanor Ealy.
Ralph Lewis Kahler was born October 5, 1935 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Harry and Josephine Landuyt Kahler. He received his education in the Iowa county schools and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54, stationed in Korea. Ralph married Yvonne Kober on October 10, 1959 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was employed for 33 years with Farmstead Foods in Cedar Rapids, as a lineman and a forklift operator.
Ralph was an avid Iowa football fan. He loved his country and flag. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially plants and flowers, and the animals too. Shuffleboard was a favorite pastime. Ralph’s highest priority was his family, and he loved to spend time with the kids, grandkids and the new great-grandchild. He was a loving and giving person, always helping others without hesitation.
