Karen Louise Kline, age 89 of Brooklyn, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 8, 2013, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, Iowa with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Inurnment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to the Brooklyn Food Bank. There will be no visitation. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is handling the arrangements.
Karen is survived by a brother Eldon Kline (Brenda) of Cherry Valley, IL; a sister Gail Schiltz of Sterling, IL; two sisters-in-law Marcena Kline of Brooklyn and Trudy Kline of Doud, IA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Alford Dean, William and Giles Kline.
Karen was born October 16, 1923 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Goldie Fern Smith Kline. She received her education in the Poweshiek County schools and graduated in 1941. She entered the convent of the Third Order of St. Francis, taking her final vows in 1955. Karen went on to become a registered nurse, working at several hospitals, including St. Francis in Waterloo, and Skiff in Newton, Iowa. She took a leave of absence to care for her aging father in 1974. She returned to nursing and worked at many area care facilities including Brooklyn, Grinnell and Amana. Karen enjoyed crocheting, knitting and gardening. She was a quiet person and enjoyed the birds and animals of this world. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn.
