Agnes E. Stone, age 91 of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Saturday evening, September 6, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2014, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.
Agnes Elizabeth Sherbon Stone, daughter of James Clinton and Margaret Elizabeth Wintringer Sherbon, was born June 18, 1923, near Walker, Iowa. She graduated from the Walker Public School in 1941.
Her interest in news writing began with the high school paper, continued to the hometown paper and during WWII to a hometown newsletter to area servicemen and women, and features in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Her newswriting interest took her to the Marion Sentinel. There she met Donald Stone. They were married August 9, 1947, and in 1954 they moved to Brooklyn, IA, where they were both employed by the Brooklyn Chronicle and the Brooklyn Paper. Her columns, “embers” and “a stone’s throw," were of local interest. In addition, she served on the committees to research and write the history of Brooklyn and the history of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, its Altar and Rosary Society, the Patrician Club, the B.B.B., and a neighborhood group. She served on the Brooklyn Library Board for several years and served on the board for the Brooklyn Community Fund Drive. She enjoyed doing for others, as well as tending to her flowers, both indoors and out.
Agnes is survived by her children, Jamie (Ron) Ginkens of Chariton, IA; Donn (Jane) of Boone, IA; Susan (Glenn) Knox of Oskaloosa, IA; Diane (Alan) Marshall of Center Point, IA; Kristine (Craig) Robinson of Gilman, IA; Pat Howard of Urbandale, IA; Traci Carney of Huxley, IA; and Anthony (Barbara) of Lansing, MI; 25 grandchildren: Genni Ginkens Heffron, Carrie Knox VanMersbergen, Jason Marshall, Aaron Ginkens, Rachel Knox Buchanan, Leslie Marshall Althoff, Robert Knox, Ryann Ginkens, Amanda Stone Swart, Tiffany Squiers Proctor, Amy Marshall, Melissa Stone Stewart, Casie Squiers Smith, Michelle Stone Borrison, Mallory Marshall, Matthew Stone, Austin Howard, Walker Howard, Jack Carney, Parker Howard, Michael Marshall, Anthony Stone, Maggi Carney, Lesli Carney, and Gabriella Stone; 21 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993, her infant son Timothy, her parents, four brothers, four sisters, and 13 step-brothers and sisters.
