Wayne M. Kanke, age 67 of Marengo, Iowa, died Sunday, November 30, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 5, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, December 4, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Wayne is survived by his daughter Stacy McMann (Travis) of Marengo; his son Jock Kanke (Mandi) of Marengo; ten grandchildren, Stephanie Ballard (Nathan), Katelin and Andrea Healey, Molly and Macy McMann, Tre and Lorenzo Gonzalez, and Sahara, Carli, and Hayden Kanke; and a great-granddaughter, Emery Ballard. He is also survived by five brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law, an aunt, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Being an only child, Wayne spent many hours with his extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Linda on March 20, 2013, and a brother-in-law.
Wayne Myron Kanke was born January 17, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Myron and Veda Furler Kanke. He graduated from Benton Community High School in 1966, and served in the U.S. Air Force for 3 years stationed in Okinawa. He married Linda Slaymaker on April 12, 1969 at First United Methodist Church in Marengo. Wayne was employed through the years, with Solar Homes, Shellar Globe, Amana Refrigeration and Big G Foods. Lastly he owned and operated The Pit Stop bar from 2005-13.
Wayne enjoyed dirt track racing, bowling, and tractor pulls. He played piano/keyboard with the band “Home Grown”, and sang with “The Believers”. He was a loyal fan and attended most Iowa Valley sporting events. He was active in his community umpiring and coaching for the MRC teams, and serving on the board of Marengo Memorial Hospital. Wayne was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, and the Marengo American Legion Post #76.
