Delmar C. Willett, age 97 of Brooklyn, died May 27, 2014 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.  Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 31, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating.  Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military honors.  Visitation: 9 A.M. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles, and a half-sister Laurel Van Polen. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Delmar C. Willett was born February 20, 1917 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa to Cecil and Lois Ogden Willett. His mother died when Delmar was five days old.  His father remarried to Flossie Brannian in 1920. She died in 1923. Delmar’s aunt, Mazie Ormiston helped to raise the three young children. Delmar graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1936 and served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1943 during World War II. He was seriously wounded while serving his country and received the Purple Heart and many other service medals.  He returned home and farmed in the Brooklyn area. He and Maxine Bors were married in 1957. They later divorced. 

Delmar loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed playing cards at the Front Street Tap in the afternoons.  He was a member of the Brooklyn American Legion Post #294.
