Cornelia (Moershel) Zuber was born March 28, 1920, to Dr. Henry Moershel and Henrietta (Jeck) Moershel of Homestead. She was a member of the second graduating class from Amana High School in 1937.  Connie attended Coe College where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and 70-year participant in the Round Robin chain letter. She married William “Bill” Zuber of Middle Amana on October 14, 1939. Bill played professional baseball and he and Connie made a home for their family in Cleveland, Boston, The Bronx, and Sarasota with Homestead as their “Home Base”. After Bill’s baseball career the couple bought the Homestead Hotel and operated it as Bill Zuber’s Dugout restaurant for over 55 years.

Connie was a life-long member of the Amana Church Society, Homestead Welfare Club, Amana Arts Guild, Amana Heritage Society, National Restaurant Association, and Major League Baseball Players Association.

Connie loved to travel, especially to Europe. One of her most memorable travels was with Bill and the Cleveland Indians to Havana, Cuba for a professional baseball exhibition series in the 1940s. Later in life she spent winters in Sarasota, Florida and hosted many family and friends escaping from the cold Iowa winters.

Oma Connie was a lovely and beautiful person, both inside and out. She is best remembered for her compassion and graciousness. Oma always made others feel happy, special, and loved. Her greatest treasure was family.

She is survived by her sister Henrietta (Don) Hale of Nevada, IA; her son Dennis (Elaine) Zuber of Homestead, IA and daughter Connie Baugh of Middle IA; Grandchildren Eric (Kimberly) Zuber of South Amana, IA, Inge Baugh of Cape Coral FL, Nick (Kristie) Zuber of Cedar Rapids, IA, Gunther (Houssey) Baugh of Geneva, Switzerland, Heidi (Mike) Sandersfeld of Middle Amana, IA, and Gretchen (Brad) Muhlenbruck of Middle, Ia. and Great-grandchildren Gerrod and Johanna Zuber, Connor, Hannah and Michael Zuber, Simon Baugh, Gunther and Ellery Sandersfeld, and Reiner Muhlenbruck. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, a brother Dr. William Moershel and his wife Phyllis.

"We would like to thank all those who cared for Oma Connie".
