Russell E. Blomme, age 69 of Marengo, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 28, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Mercy Hospice Chaplain Joe Kane officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife Carol; a son Jon Blomme (Vicki) of Victor; a daughter Stefani Vaverka (Jon) of Brooklyn; and a grandchild, Camiel Blomme. Also surviving are a brother, Vernon (Mary Ellen) of Belle Plaine, and a sister Beverly Maschmann of Marengo, and special friends, Donna Poessel and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Colton Blomme, three brothers Richard, Virgil, and Howard, and a brother-in-law Russell Maschmann.
Russell Emiel Blomme was born July 27, 1943 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Emiel and Marie Steyaert Blomme. He graduated from Victor High School in 1961. Russell served his country as a member of the Army Reserves. He married Susan Duffus, and two children were born to this union. The couple later divorced. He married Carol Lea Miller on October 11, 1986 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Russell was employed over the years at Maschmann Gulf Gas Station in Victor, the Fetzer Gas Station, which he later purchased and renamed Russ’ DX. Russell then went to work at Dusty’s Tire in Coralville, and lastly was employed by the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Russell was a member of the Victor American Legion Post #54. He enjoyed woodworking in his free time.
