Arlene Heinen age 83, of Brooklyn, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held for Arlene at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with Rev Josh Gerard officiating. Inurnment will be at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2023, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be directed to the Brooklyn Library.
Arlene is survived by her husband Howard of Brooklyn, her sons Brent Heinen of Malcom, Mike (Karen) Heinen of Williamsburg; Karen’s children Jennifer (Cory) Richmond of Ely, Stephanie Timm (Dylan McCrabb) of Williamsburg, Michelle Timm of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren Dempsey, Evra and Rooney Richmond and her brother Dale Byerly of Mondovi, WI.
She is preceded in death by her parents Kendly and Elsie Foreman Byerly, and her older brothers Gerald Byerly and Wayne Byerly.
Arlene Lucille Byerly was born January 26, 1940, in Iowa County, Iowa. She grew up on a farm, attending country school south of Brooklyn, graduating from Brooklyn high school with the class of 1958. Arlene was united in marriage to Howard Heinen on October 24, 1959, at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. They moved together to Topeka, KS. while Howard was in the service, stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. The couple later returned to Brooklyn and made their home. Arlene worked for the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company in Grinnell, and also Poweshiek County Savings Bank in Brooklyn for close to 40 years, until her retirement. Arlene enjoyed reading, baking, traveling, and going sightseeing out of state. She was fond of many animals, especially dogs, and loved watching all the birds come to her feeders.
